Cover-up
A brand new design that hides the old tattoo. It usually needs to be larger and use darker areas, texture and shading to disguise what's underneath.
Rework
Keep the idea, fix the execution. Your artist strengthens lines, adds shading and detail, and builds on the original.
Refresh
An older piece that has faded or blurred over time, brought back with fresh black and new contrast.
How it works
- Email us a clear close-up photo of the tattoo and one from a distance, plus your ideas, any references and the size you have in mind.
- Your artist will tell you what's possible, which style works best over your existing tattoo, and give you a price and time estimate.
- A 50% non-refundable deposit secures your appointment.
- Cover-ups are freehanded on the day, so the design fits your existing tattoo and the shape of your body exactly.
Which styles cover best?
Styles with plenty of shading and texture tend to hide old work well: black and grey realism, Japanese, dotwork and dense floral or botanical designs. Very light or fine line designs are harder to use as cover-ups. Your artist will talk you through the options for your tattoo.

Can any tattoo be covered up?
Most can, but very dark or very large tattoos limit the options. Send us clear photos and your artist will be honest about what will work, including whether laser fading first would help.
How much does a cover-up tattoo cost in Colchester?
Our minimum price is £100, which is also our hourly rate. Cover-ups are priced like any other custom piece, based on size and time, and are usually larger than the original tattoo.
Can I see the cover-up design before the day?
Cover-ups are freehanded on the day so the new design fits the old tattoo and your body exactly. Your artist will go through the plan with you before starting.
Do I need laser removal before a cover-up?
Not usually. A few sessions of laser fading can give more design options for very dark or heavy tattoos. Your artist will tell you if it is worth it when you send photos.
Can you tattoo over scars?
Often, yes, once the scar is fully healed. Email us photos of the area and we will let you know what is possible.
