Guide for first timers
Getting your first tattoo is a mix of excitement and nerves. This guide walks you through booking, the day itself and healing at Black Hope Tattoo in Colchester, so you feel informed, comfortable and confident every step of the way.
Send us a DM or email with what you'd like, the placement, a rough size and any reference images. The more detail, the better.
Once your artist has quoted, a 50% non-refundable deposit secures your appointment. It goes towards your tattoo.
In the days before, drink plenty of water, moisturise, and avoid sunburn and sunbeds. On the day, eat a proper meal, avoid alcohol for 24 hours beforehand, and wear comfy clothes that give easy access to the area.
There's no judgement, no pressure and no rushing. We go completely at your pace. You'll fill in a consent and medical form before you start.
Your artist goes over the design with you 15 to 20 minutes before your appointment. Small changes are fine, and it's your tattoo, so speak up.
Short answer: yes, but it's manageable. Ribs, armpits and elbows tend to hurt more; outer arms and thighs are easier. We take breaks whenever you need. You're in control.
Remove the dressing after about two hours, wash gently with warm water and fragrance-free soap, pat dry and let it breathe overnight.
Around day 3 to 7 the tattoo will flake and peel like sunburn, and it may itch. Do not pick or scratch it.
The surface heals in about 2 to 4 weeks, and the deeper layers in up to 8 weeks. After that, protect it with high-factor sun cream to keep it sharp.
Questions
Our minimum price is £100, which covers most small first tattoos. Larger pieces are priced at £100 an hour, and a 50% non-refundable deposit secures your appointment.
Outer arms, forearms, outer thighs and calves tend to hurt least. Ribs, feet, hands, elbows and armpits are more sensitive. We take breaks whenever you need.
You must be 18 by law, and parental consent does not apply to tattooing. If you are under 25, bring a valid driving licence or passport.
We advise against it, as it can change how the skin takes ink. Eat a good meal beforehand, sleep well and skip alcohol, and most people find it very manageable.
Friends are welcome to wait in reception, but they cannot come into the tattoo area.
