Dotwork builds shading out of thousands of individual dots, giving a soft, textured gradient that line shading can't match. Paired with geometry, it creates mandalas, ornamental patterns and sacred symbols that flow with the shape of the body.
At Black Hope Tattoo, dotwork is led by Pinky Darling, who has been tattooing for over a decade. Repeated geometric symbols and mandalas are the foundation of her work, often merged with animals, flowers and other styles.
Symmetrical designs that sit perfectly on knees, elbows, sternums and the centre of the back.
Flower of life, knotwork and pattern work that frames the body, from forearm bands to full back pieces.
Tigers, wolves, owls and stags set inside geometric frames, combining realism-style subjects with dotwork backgrounds.
Sleeves, chest pieces and back pieces are planned around your body's natural lines and tattooed over several sessions. Send your artist the placement, rough size and any references, and they'll suggest how to break the work into sittings. Artists also offer a day rate for longer sessions.
Dotwork can look slightly patchy for the first few weeks while it settles. Follow your aftercare, avoid sunbeds for about four weeks, and the shading will even out as it heals.

Our minimum price is £100, which is also our hourly rate. Dotwork takes time to build up, so the price depends on size, detail and placement. Send your idea for a quote.
Most people find it about the same. The needle moves more slowly to place each dot, which some find easier. We take breaks whenever you need.
Well-spaced dotwork ages well. Your artist designs the dot density for the size and placement so the shading stays soft and readable, and good aftercare and sun cream keep it crisp.
Yes. Pinky regularly designs large geometric and mandala pieces that flow with the body, from forearms and legs to full back pieces, tattooed over several sessions.
